Dental desensitization is a technique that helps patients become more comfortable in a dental environment. The best candidates for this approach patients who resist or decline dental treatment due to fear, anxiety, or behavioral management concerns. The effects of dental desensitization have been studied on children with autism spectrum disorder and have shown to be a successful approach to acclimate patients to a real dental setting. This is done by gradually exposing patients to any senses they may experience in a real dental environment.

The progress of dental desensitization varies from patient to patient and can usually take multiple visits for the patient to even become comfortable with one of our providers. It is important that there is consistency from both the caretaker and provider in helping the patients gain trust and confidence in themselves.

Considering that a large portion of our patient population falls under this category, InterTeleDent was intentional about providing this as a service to others who need it. Through this service, we hope to promote regular dental visits and decrease the need for GA sedation.

How Does It Work?

Our dental desensitization program will allow you to work closely with behavioral therapists and dental providers (dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dentists) who are highly trained in desensitization techniques. In addition to this, you can request an in-home dental desensitization kit that provides you with materials, tools, and instruments that are commonly used in a dental office along with a guide on how to use each item.

Interteledent’s behavioral therapists will provide you with techniques on how to reduce anxiety, manage behavioral issues, and how to help the patient become more confident in a dental setting. Dental providers will help patients by gradually exposing them to treatment. Together our team has created training modules that you can watch on your own time and practice with the patient. The caretaker of the patient plays a huge role in our desensitization program as you are responsible for helping instill habits and practice on a weekly basis.
